South Africa's abortion Act that legalised abortion-on-demand is amongst the most onerous in the world. The whole passing of the act was handled undemocratically; the government first ignored the overwhelming public opinion against abortion; the ruling party refused a conscience vote for its members when the Bill was voted upon in Parliament, public hearings were held in cape Town only, discriminating against the very communities the Act proposed to help.
By passing the Act, the government attributed to themselves the privilege and power to adjust the boundary between good and evil and betweenwhat is just and unjust. It is negating the fundamental reason for which it was instituted : the defence of every human being's right to life. The abortion act therefore perverts the very nature of a democratic society and has set the principle that only those who are wanted and are able to speak for and defend themselves have the right to life in the new South Africa.
October 3 is international Life Chain day, and NAL will stage life chains in the major cities across South Africa.
Speakers will highlight the value of human life and the immoral standards rampant in South Africa. Further, they will remind thwe voting public to exercise its conscience in accordance with moral standards that promote the value of all human life - born and unborn, in the light of the forthcoming elections.
The short addresses will be followed by the Life Chain, which will cnsist of a quiet proest, with people standing in single file with posters.
